Understand your product. Not what you are selling. But rather, understand what the consumer is buying.
Viral media is more than dancing cats, viral media can help propel a product or a company into the limelight quite quickly. Most recent example is the ‘snuggie’ which is essentially a blanket with sleeves, that began advertising on TV.

The online community found the Snuggie and its advertising to be amusing and comical. For comedy's sake many individuals posted the commercial online and began blogging on the product and commercial. The movement caught on as TV hosts began dawning the product, for comedy's sake, and the company saw product sales go through the roof!
This product was able to surpass any expected sales goals by becoming a viral product that was able to gain and retain support from the online media.
Viral media is a great way to get rapid exposure for a product. However it should not be used to build a brand or loyalty.
